Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the ID request. You are correct that the bugs in your photo are seed bugs (family Lygaeidae). Yours are in the genus Lygaeus, though I'm not sure what species they are in. It's often tough to identify western material all the way to species. They look most like small milkweed bugs (L. kalmii), but I'm pretty sure that isn't the species- the areas that are gray on your bugs are black on kalmii. They are either toxic in their own right or mimicking toxic species like the milkweed bug. Either way, the bold red and black pattern is a warning color, which is probably why the lizard had no interest in them.
